Curriculum
The SCSNA
curriculum is a developmentally appropriate program for preschool and
elementary aged
children. The preschool program is accredited by the National
Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the
elementary program is in the initial stages of accreditation by the
Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). Classroom
teachers design a variety of activities that encourage the child’s
spiritual, social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development.
The elementary curriculum is a challenging academic curriculum that
balances hands on
learning experiences with strong, goal oriented instruction. It is
content driven with classic literature, world history, geography, and
science. There is a strong reading and writing emphasis and a
traditional approach to math. Renaissance Place is utilized for
Accelerated Math and Accelerated Reading. Our Stanford
test scores are available
here. Parents
are encouraged to attend meetings that provide additional information,
such as Curriculum Night, Parent Coffees and
Parent/Teacher conferences.
SCSNA is
fortunate to have a very talented and energetic faculty. Teachers
provide rich and meaningful learning experiences for the children. In
addition to this classroom instruction, children attend specialty
classes. Preschoolers attend Chapel, Music, Gymnastics and Elementary
students attend Chapel, Music, Physical Education and Spanish.
Chapel:
Christian values serve as the cornerstone of the curriculum at SCSNA.
As a nondenominational Christian school, our focus is on teaching
basic Christian principles and values. Bible stories, Bible verses,
and music are all ways we integrate faith and learning. In the
elementary grades, chapel services focus on specific themes each week.
Students explore the theme through
songs, scripture, object lessons and opportunities for service at
school and outside of school. Chapel serves as a vital and unifying
force within the school community.
Gymnastics: Preschool children participate in gymnastics once a
week for approximately 30 minutes. Children work on balance,
coordination, basic gymnastics moves and other large motor skills.
Children should dress appropriately in pants or shorts and sneakers.
We recommend that you refrain from ponytails and large hair clips on
gym days.
Physical
Education: Elementary students will have P.E. twice per week. The
program focuses on balance, coordination, and various large motor
skills. Children learn the value of cooperation through involvement in
individual and team sports. They are encouraged to exercise as a
lifestyle and learn to view exercise as an integral part of healthy
living.
Music:
Children have many opportunities to build self esteem and reinforce
many academic skills through music. The music curriculum is designed
to provide appropriate music instruction beginning with the preschool
classes. Children play singing games, enjoy finger plays and develop
rhythm. As the children get older, they begin to develop a singing
voice and explore the elements of music, such as pitch and timbre. The
children play musical instruments, which promote rhythm and important
listening skills. In the elementary grades, children learn music
theory, simple composition and more
advanced experimentation with instruments and choir.
Spanish:
Elementary children in grades 1-5 participate in Spanish lessons twice
weekly for one half hour. Kindergarten participates once weekly for
one half hour. This introduction to a foreign language is a wonderful
way to expose children to our diverse world.
Technology: Our teachers design developmentally appropriate
activities that enrich and enhance learning through the use of
technology.
